There are reasons that pain in the big toe can occur. It may happen suddenly from an injury or it can gradually occur. Pain in this toe may be a symptom indicating an existing medical condition and a podiatrist can determine what that condition is. Gout is a condition that develops suddenly and affects the joints in the big toe. It can produce excruciating pain and discomfort and may be controlled by the types of foods that are eaten. Additionally, a bunion is another condition that gradually occurs. Bunions are characterized by a bony protrusion that forms on the side of the big toe. Severe bunions may cause pain and larger shoes may need to be purchased to accommodate the bunion. Some people develop ingrown toenails which generally affects the big toe. When left untreated, an infection may occur and medical attention is often sought. A sudden injury can produce a broken toe and relief and stability may be found when the affected toe is taped to the toe next to it. If you have pain in your big toe, it is strongly advised that you consult with a podiatrist who can determine what the cause is followed by implementing effective treatment strategies.

Dorsal Foot Pain

The foot is an intricate body part with 26 bones, 30 joints, and over 100 ligaments, muscles, and tendons. With all that could go wrong with feet, it may be difficult to determine why one has pain on the top or dorsal part of your foot. Symptoms accompanying dorsal foot pain include redness, warmth, or swelling in the forefoot or toes, sensitivity to putting on shoes or socks, and a limited range of motion in the foot and toes. Possible causes of top-of-the-foot pain may be toe stress fractures, gout, peripheral neuropathy, or osteoarthritis. Injuries can happen from a specific event or from excessive repetitive activities. Pain can also result from other health conditions, like gout, osteoarthritis, two different forms of arthritis, or diabetes. Depending on the underlying cause, avoiding irritating activities, resting, and being on top of health issues can help alleviate foot pain. If you have dorsal foot pain that does not go away or worsens, seeing a podiatrist can help get to the root of the problem and provide suggestions for relief.

Symptoms of an Achilles Tendon Injury

People who have endured an Achilles tendon injury may have to temporarily alter their lives. It generally happens as a result of an injury that affects the Achilles tendon, and walking may be impossible until proper treatment is provided. This tendon is located in the calf, and connects the calf muscles to the heel. An injury can cause this tendon to rupture, or it may become inflamed from overuse. This can happen from running on uneven surfaces, or from increasing speed and mileage too quickly. If the injury happens from gradual overuse, common symptoms may include stiffness in the heel area after arising, and it can be difficult to flex the foot. Symptoms from a sudden injury can consist of intense pain in the calf and heel, the inability to stand on tiptoes, and a popping sound may be heard. If you have any of the above symptoms, please contact a podiatrist as quickly as possible so the correct treatment can begin.

Achilles tendon injuries need immediate attention to avoid future complications. If you have any concerns, contact Dr. Eddy Caldwell of Foot Care of Northeast Arkansas, P.A.. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is the Achilles Tendon?

The Achilles tendon is a tendon that connects the lower leg muscles and calf to the heel of the foot. It is the strongest tendon in the human body and is essential for making movement possible. Because this tendon is such an integral part of the body, any injuries to it can create immense difficulties and should immediately be presented to a doctor.

What Are the Symptoms of an Achilles Tendon Injury?

There are various types of injuries that can affect the Achilles tendon. The two most common injuries are Achilles tendinitis and ruptures of the tendon.

Achilles Tendinitis Symptoms

  • Inflammation
  • Dull to severe pain
  • Increased blood flow to the tendon
  • Thickening of the tendon

Rupture Symptoms

  • Extreme pain and swelling in the foot
  • Total immobility

Treatment and Prevention

Achilles tendon injuries are diagnosed by a thorough physical evaluation, which can include an MRI. Treatment involves rest, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery. However, various preventative measures can be taken to avoid these injuries, such as:

  • Thorough stretching of the tendon before and after exercise
  • Strengthening exercises like calf raises, squats, leg curls, leg extensions, leg raises, lunges, and leg presses

What Is Turf Toe?

Turf toe is an injury to the joint at the base of the big toe that often occurs in athletes who play field sports, like football, baseball, and soccer. It happens when an athlete forcefully jams his or her toe into the ground and it bends backward, beyond its normal limit. This can easily happen when a sport is played on grass or artificial turf, hence the name turf toe. Some experts believe this injury can also result from sports shoes that do not have a stiff toe, are not rigid enough in the forefoot, or from not wearing the correct cleats on their shoes for their chosen sport. This type of injury usually results in a bruise at the base of the big toe, where the joint capsules and ligaments have stretched or torn. This affliction causes extreme and immediate pain and over time the joint may become stiff and be more prone to arthritis. The lack of mobility in this joint can increase the chance of injuring the big toe again in the future. It must heal completely or will impede continuation in sports. If you or your child has hurt their big toe in this way, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist who can make a proper diagnosis and offer treatment.

Ankle and foot injuries are common among athletes and in many sports. They can be caused by several problems and may be potentially serious. If you are feeling pain or think you were injured in a sporting event or when exercising, consult with Dr. Eddy Caldwell from Foot Care of Northeast Arkansas, P.A.. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Common Injuries

The most common injuries that occur in sporting activities include:

  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains
  • Broken Foot
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Stress Fractures
  • Turf Toe

Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending upon the injury and in some cases, there may be no symptoms at all. However, in most cases, some form of symptom is experienced. Pain, aching, burning, bruising, tenderness, tightness or stiffness, sensation loss, difficulty moving, and swelling are the most common symptoms.

Treatment

Just as symptoms vary depending upon the injury, so do treatment options. A common treatment method is known as the RICE method. This method involves rest, applying ice, compression and elevating the afflicted foot or ankle. If the injury appears to be more serious, surgery might be required, such as arthroscopic or reconstructive surgery. Lastly, rehabilitation or therapy might be needed to gain full functionality in the afflicted area. Any discomfort experienced by an athlete must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

There is a type of inflammatory arthritis that is known as gout. It generally causes severe pain and discomfort, and affects the big toe. High levels of uric acid are responsible for the onset of gout, and it can lodge in the form of crystals in the joints of the big toe. Eating foods that have elevated levels of purines can cause gout to occur, or it may happen for genetic reasons. These types of foods can include shellfish, red meat, and drinks that are made with large amounts of sugar. People who have frequent gout attacks may be prone to developing other medical conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease, or congestive heart failure. Some methods can be implemented, which may help limit gout attacks. These can consist of drinking plenty of water daily, limiting the amount of sugar consumed, and engaging in a gentle exercise program. Gout can compromise lifestyles, so it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can help you to manage this condition.

Gout is a foot condition that requires certain treatment and care. If you are seeking treatment, contact Dr. Eddy Caldwell from Foot Care of Northeast Arkansas, P.A.. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.
